The Montecristo M is a regular production cigar made in Nicaraguan by AJ Fernandez, featuring a Golden Connecticut Shade wrapper grown in Ecuador and aged for twenty years. It’s the latest collaboration between Montecristo and AJ Fernandez. Unlike their other collaborations, this cigar line is not built for power, but for a medium-bodied experience. The wrapper is at the center of the blend. It was crafted to highlight the subtle aspects of the extra aged tobacco. The leaf in question sat in carefully controlled storage for two decades; an extraordinary duration in a field where most tobacco is aged for just a few years. Over that time, the leaf became thinner, and more elastic, making it easier for rollers to handle, and its harsher qualities faded as the bitterness softened. What’s left is a cigar that’s stable, even, and more balanced. David Perez, a fifth-generation grower, cultivated the wrapper, with the rest shaped by AJ Fernandez at his San Lotano factory in Esteli. The wrapper itself is cultivated by E.S.P. Enterprises and the extra-fermented filler and binder are Nicaraguan, but more dialed back in strength to allow the wrapper to shine. This is a departure from Fernandez’s reputation for boldness, but it was all done purposefully. The result is a cigar that develops slowly. The opening features notes of cedar, cream, and barnyard hay. As it deepens, roasted nuts and dry oak make their appearance. A dash of spice delivers the finishing touches. It stays consistent without being flat throughout the experience. The construction, true to Fernandez’s standards, is sharp, reliable, and even throughout.
